Pope Francis rips capitalism and trickle-down economics; Travis Gettys; The Raw Story; November 26, 2013.

Below is a critique of the subject piece.

The document to which this piece refers is the “APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION EVANGELII GAUDIUM” of Pope Francis (11/24/13).  I found no examples claiming this exhortation is an ex cathedra document, meaning papal infallibility does not apply.  This means Catholics are not obligated to accept the positions described in the document.

The Pope is entitled to his opinion just like everyone else.  Simply by being the Pope does not make Pope Francis’ opinions more valid than your opinion or mine.

The real point of this critique is to show the two-faced behavior of many activists, politicians, and pundits.

Here is a comment made by Bob Schmetzer, VP of BCR:

“I have been waiting for years to hear that the unemployed are the exploited and discarded pieces of society from any leader. Ronald Reagan had discarded the Sherman Anti-Trust act. It stopped Monopolies and protected Labor by stating that workers shall not be used as a commodity. Everyone has a right to provide a life for their families. Small businesses have been destroyed by the big box stores and their monopolies. Workers used to have cradle to grave jobs. Now the average American changes careers at least 7 times , that’s if they can find employment. Pensions have been stolen and Social Security is under attack ! Hospitalization is priced out of site , even if you hold a steady job. Yes, the moral fiber of this society no longer exist. Now if only the Pope can get his church to get on the right road and out of women’s and young boys pants. There might be some hope for all societies. Sarah Palin is shocked to hear that the Pope is taking such a Liberal position. Just wait to when she meets Jesus !”

In a previous Facebook post (2/24/12), Mr. Schmetzer referred to Catholic priests as “70 year old virgin men who wear dresses to work.”

On his Facebook page (11/27/13), Randy Shannon (BCR Treasurer) posted a comment most of us would take as supportive.  Then we got the following comment exchange.

Harry Targ: “Maybe he’ll join CCDS or another of our socialist sister organizations.”

Randy Shannon: “we would have a great struggle with misogyny”

Here’s the lesson to be learned.  Lefties will praise Pope Francis as long as they can interpret his actions and positions as left-friendly.  Should the Pope maintain the Church’s opposition to killing unborn babies for convenience, women as priests, same-sex marriage, and so on, the left will return to vilifying the Catholic Pope.
