BCT Editorial – 9/28/04

Stealing the future; Editorial; Beaver County Times; September 28, 2004.

Allegedly, the subject of this editorial is to criticize deficit spending and its impact on future generations.  I say allegedly because of the following three points.

·        The editorial said, “Congress, with President Bush’s approval, handed out $145.94 billion in tax-cut goodies.”  In true socialist fashion, the editorial assumes the government “owns” our income.  Otherwise, the editorial would not have said the people who actually earned the income were receiving a handout.

·        The editorial rails against taxpayers keeping more of their money but not once mentions the real problem, uncontrolled spending.

·        The editorial talks about a “money grab.”  It’s not clear if this means taxpayers keeping more of their money is a money grab, or if it’s a money grab to incur debt our descendents must pay.

·        The editorial talks about a $7.4 trillion national debt.  The editorial didn’t mention this is the gross debt, not the net public debt.  The gross figure includes debt one part of the federal government owes another part.  The net public debt is about $3.9 trillion according to the Congressional Budget Office.

I don’t believe for one second the Times cares one whit about deficits.  The Times just believes in socialism and good socialists know the wages we earn really belong to the government.

I don’t like deficit spending, but I want to eliminate it by getting spending under control.  Therein lies a major difference between true conservatives and liberals; liberals “attack” deficits by increasing taxes while true conservatives address deficits by controlling spending and reducing taxes.1  Alas, though, true conservatives are few and far between these days.

1. For what it is worth, tax increases never eliminated a federal deficit.
