Fear and hatred; Editorial; Beaver County Times; September 14, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“For those who still believe in President Bush’s decision to bring peace, love and understanding to the Middle East by invading Iraq, we offer the rioting by Protestant mobs in Northern Ireland over the weekend.

[RWC] I could be wrong, but I don’t recall President Bush ever claiming he was trying “to bring peace, love and understanding to the Middle East by invading Iraq.”

“Hundreds of Protestant extremists took to the streets because an Orange parade was barred from passing along a main road that borders the Catholic section of west Belfast.

“Fear and hatred don’t die hard.  They don’t die.  Anyone who believes otherwise is fooling themselves.”

[RWC] Though the idea that “fear and hatred don’t die” is true for some people, I don’t believe it’s true for everyone or even a significant minority.

For the sake of argument, however, let’s assume the statement is correct.

If we can’t stem the tide of fear and hatred against us, should we simply do nothing and accept a fate of ceaseless attacks?

What a worthless editorial.
