Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.


“HARD TIMES: The baby boom generation is within a few years of swamping Social Security and Medicare.  And what’s really scary is that many are going to need all the help they can get.  Stan Hinden, a former Washington Post reporter who wrote a column on retirement, reports that a recent study found that half of American workers over the age of 55 have saved less than $50,000.  These workers could be in for some serious hard times if cutbacks are made in Social Security and Medicare to keep the programs viable.  And make no mistake, changes are coming.”

[RWC] Left unwritten was that socialist “safety net” programs like Socialist Security and Medicare have the (hopefully) unintended side effect of discouraging people from preparing for their future.  When you believe there will be a net to catch you in case you fall, you become less careful.
