Check out rumors; Editorial; Beaver County Times; October 23, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“Rumors of the Center Area-Monaca merger being dead are greatly exaggerated.

“In a way, the rumors are understandable but not unexpected.  In a situation where there is so much uncertainty, people are prone to grab onto gossip and treat it as gospel.

“What residents must understand is that the process is going to be a slow go because the two school districts are going where no other school districts in Pennsylvania have gone before - a voluntary merger.

“Everybody at the state and local level is feeling their way along, and it’s going to take time to sort things out.  If you hear a rumor, don’t spread it.  Check it out with someone working on the matter.”

[RWC] I’m glad I wasn’t eating when I read this last paragraph.  I might have choked.

How often does the Times use other sources (AP, et cetera) for its “news coverage” and opinion pieces, and still it admonishes us to “[c]heck it out with someone working on the matter.”  What a hoot!  Were it not for using third party sources of “information,” the Times would likely not exist as a newspaper.
