Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“For the last century, our region’s rivers contributed enormously to its industrial might.

“Barges still go up and down our rivers, but these waters have an important recreational role to play.  That’s why a plan to create a park that would cover more than 50 miles of riverfront along the Allegheny, Ohio, Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers is so exciting.

“The plan calls for the creation of continuous green space along the four rivers in Allegheny County.  It also would preserve hillsides and include amenities such as playgrounds, volleyball courts, swimming pools, bike trails, fishing piers, skateboarding and inline skating areas and cross-country skiing trails.

“The Associated Press reported that overall cost could exceed $100 million, with $15 million being needed to buy the land.

“As costly as it might seem to some, the proposal is worth pursuing because recreation is an important quality of life aspect of economic development.  The more recreational activities there are on and along our rivers, the better it is for everyone.”

[RWC] My only comment is this.  Remember this position the next time an editorial cries crocodile tears about government spending and taxes.
