Filling a void; Editorial; Beaver County Times; November 19, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“An important consequence of Republican Jim Marshall’s victory over Democrat Mike Veon in the 14th Legislative District should not be overlooked.

“Marshall’s election now gives Beaver County a presence in the Republican House Caucus, filling a void that has existed for far too long.  His win means the needs of Beaver County - and by extension, southwestern Pennsylvania - will have a chance to be heard and will be taken into consideration within the caucus.

“Given the 50-50 nature of politics in Pennsylvania and the bitter polarity of parties in the Legislature, that’s nothing to sniff at.”

[RWC] It’s funny how alleged benefits of electing a Republican appear in editorials only AFTER an election, isn’t it?

Notice the editorial didn’t detail “the needs of Beaver County - and by extension, southwestern Pennsylvania.”

Frankly, I’m not sure the Republican House Caucus looks after the best interests of Pennsylvania anymore than Democrats do.  That’s because I believe – as a group – elected PA Republicans and those in party leadership are more appropriately described as “Democrat lite.”  Remember, the Republican-majority General Assembly gave Gov. Rendell most of what he wanted, including spending and tax increases.
