Generation gap; Editorial; Beaver County Times; November 21, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“Young Americans may finally be waking up to the importance of politics.

“The Washington Post reported that 2 million more people under the age of 30 voted in the midterm election than in 2002.  Twenty-four percent of those 18 to 29 who were eligible voted, up from 20 percent in 2002.

“Significantly, the increase was the largest ever among young voters.

“Let’s hope this trend continues.  Because the elderly vote in such high percentages, elected officials at all levels kowtow to their ever whim.  And it’s only going to get worse when the baby boom generation starts to retire.”

[RWC] For some reason, the editorial failed to note the effect of liberals making “seasoned citizens” a victim group.  I’m sure it was just an oversight.

“Young people need to start voting in even higher numbers to offset this generational discrimination in government.  Unless they take action now, the present generation of retirees and the boomers will bankrupt their future.”

[RWC] “[T]he present generation of retirees and the boomers will bankrupt their future?”  I wonder why the editorial failed to blame the liberals who instituted the income and wealth redistribution programs responsible for the problems.

It’s amazing.  Liberals spend all their time creating programs to make people dependent on the government, then the liberals blame those same people for wanting to collect what they were promised.  Remember, “the present generation of retirees and the boomers” paid far more into Socialist Security and Medicare than did their predecessors.

Don’t get me wrong.  I believe it’s my generation that will need to take the brunt of the hit if we’re to tame the Socialist Security and Medicare monsters.  What I object to is the generation that paid the most into these programs is portrayed as greedy.
