BCT Editorial – 2/12/07

This page was last updated on February 25, 2007.

Chump change; Editorial; Beaver County Times; February 12, 2007.

Rather than do a point-by-point critique of the entire editorial, I’ll address only a few paragraphs.

The editorial states, “Of course, GOP leaders know that $75 million in property tax rebates is sure to grab people’s attention.  But once you break the numbers down, taxpayers would receive a mere pittance.

“Back in 2000, the state set aside $330 million for property tax rebates of $100 each.  At that time, the state had about 3.3 million property owners.  By the Aug. 1 deadline, only 60 percent had applied.

“Divide $75 million by 3.3 million property owners.  It comes out to around $22 per property owner.”

This is all true.  So why didn’t the Times make the same “pittance” argument in its editorial about the “Wage gap” non-issue?  Oops.

If the Times is going to be inconsistent (read: hypocritical), at least it should put some distance between contradictory editorials so the hypocrisy is harder to see.
