Convention center’s closing could have impact; Editorial; Beaver County Times; February 12, 2007.

Rather than do a point-by-point critique of the entire editorial, I’ll address only a few paragraphs.

The editorial states, “It’s an embarrassment that could have a huge impact on the economy of the city, the county and the region. … But the impact of this collapse goes beyond economics and safety.  The convention center has gotten rave reviews, nationally and internationally, for being environmentally friendly and for its spectacular design.  Because of that, it’s done a lot to improve the image of the city, and, by extension, the county and region.  Concerns over safety would negate that.”

The editorial asserts a closing “could have a huge impact on the economy of the city, the county and the region,” yet provides no figures to support that opinion.  Perhaps that’s because economics takes a backseat to the Convention Center allegedly “being environmentally friendly and for its spectacular design.”

I haven’t been following this issue, but the last I heard politicians were telling us the Convention Center needed a hotel if it’s to be successful.  Could it be the editorial provided no economic figures because the Convention Center is already “the white elephant the county would be stuck with?”
