Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“U.S. Sen. John McCain’s ‘Straight Talk Express’ has gone off the tracks.

“Last week, the Arizona Republican and GOP presidential candidate ripped former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.  Basically, McCain placed the blame for the mess in Iraq squarely on Rumsfeld.

“However, he conveniently ignored the fact the President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were equally responsible.”

[RWC] Hmm, and the Times forgot Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, John Kerry, and all the Democrats who voted for the Iraq War Resolution in 2002.  The Times also forgot all the members of Congress who for all intents and purposes are aiding and abetting the enemy.  I’m sure these were honest oversights. <g>

“McCain built his reputation as being a straight talker.  If this keeps up, he’s going to lose credibility, especially with independent voters.”

[RWC] What BS!  Mr. McCain’s “reputation” with media outlets like the Times has nothing to do with “being a straight talker.”  Check the record and you find Mr. McCain was “popular” with the media only when he opposed either conservative or Republican positions on an issue.
