Over here; Editorial; Beaver County Times; February 25, 2007.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“The contrast is startling - and embarrassing.

“Great Britain is buzzing because Prince Harry, third in line to the throne and a second lieutenant in the Blues and Royals regiment of the Household Cavalry, will head to Iraq when his unit is deployed there.

“Although the much-debated decision was out of the 22-year-old’s hands, the prince already had made up his mind.  In a television interview for his 21st birthday, Harry said, ‘There’s no way I’m going to put myself through Sandhurst (Military Academy), and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country.’

“America is buzzing, too - about Anna Nicole Smith and Britney Spears.  Only a few Americans are talking about the failure of children of the ruling class over here to express the same sentiments and display the same sense of duty to country as Harry.”

[RWC] FYI, Great Britain is also “buzzing … about Anna Nicole Smith and Britney Spears.”

You have to give the Times “credit.”  When it latches onto a piece of liberalspeak like “ruling class,” it doesn’t let go.

We should hold a contest to see how often during the next year editorials refer to the nonexistent “ruling class.”
