Civilized?; Editorial; Beaver County Times; April 17, 2007.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“The legislation seemed at odds with a supposedly civilized country.

“Congress recently passed a measure that cracks down on dogfighting and cockfighting by making it a felony to transport an animal across state lines for that purpose.

“The crime was upgraded from a misdemeanor to a felony.

“The Associated Press reported the bill also outlaws commerce in cockfighting weapons - knifelike instruments that are attached to roosters’ legs during fights.

“Dogfighting is illegal in every state, and New Mexico last month became the 49th state to ban cockfighting, making Louisiana the only state where it’s legal.”

[RWC] Gee, I wonder why the editorial failed to note Democrats have run Louisiana forever.  If Republicans ran Louisiana, I suspect that point would have been made.

“Of course, just because something is illegal doesn’t mean people won’t do it.  However, it is staggering that some people still see nothing wrong in pitting animals against each other.

“We really aren’t that far removed from the primordial ooze, are we?”

[RWC] The reason for this critique is to call attention to the negativism underlying the liberalism constantly displayed by Times editorials.

The Times takes what is a likely a very small number of people that likes to see animals fight each other and uses that to indict the human race.  This is like having a glass 95% full and complaining it’s 5% empty.

Here’s another example.  The editorial “Managing decline” (I did not critique it.) told us our region is in decline and effectively said there’s nothing we can do about it.

Yesterday’s editorial eulogizing “Kurt Vonnegut” provided yet another example when it told us, “We’ll end with the 14th Book of Bokonon, a phony religion Vonnegut created for ‘Cat’s Cradle.’  The title of the book is ‘What can a thoughtful man hope for mankind on earth given the experience of the past million years?’  The book is a quick read because its only verse consists of one word – ‘Nothing.’”

The point is, liberalism relies on negativity and hopelessness to “attract” followers.  Once the followers are convinced everything is bad, liberal leadership then sells socialism and big government (never using those words) as the only way out of the darkness.
