Railroaded; Editorial; Beaver County Times; April 18, 2007.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“Blind ambition can blind justice.

“In the wake of rape charges made against three Duke lacrosse players being dropped, Reade Seligmann, one of the students, made an observation that should be read by everyone who puts law and order and national security ahead of constitutional rights.”

[RWC] The charges were not just “dropped.”  The North Carolina Attorney General declared the accused men innocent.

“‘The entire experience has opened my eyes up to a tragic world of injustice I never knew existed,’ he said.  ‘If police officers and a district attorney can systematically railroad us with absolutely no evidence whatsoever, I can’t imagine what they would do to people who do not have the resources to defend themselves.’

“It’s not just law enforcement.  Since Sept. 11, 2001, far too many Americans - including President Bush and members of his administration - believe that constitutional rights should take a back seat to national security.”

[RWC] Note the editorial provides no examples.

“But as the plight of the three Duke lacrosse players shows, government officials don’t always play by the rules and can act in their own best interests, not justice or national security.”

[RWC] The only point I want to make is to note my amazement at the extent the Times will go to try and smear President Bush.

How infected with Bush Derangement Syndrome must the editorial authors be to attempt to link the Duke case with President Bush?  What’s next, an allegation President Bush was on the grassy knoll in Dallas on November 22, 1963?

Oh, there’s one last point.  Did you notice the editorial failed to note the political affiliation of the “rogue district attorney?”  In case you didn’t guess, he’s a Democrat.
