Admission of failure; Editorial; Beaver County Times; June 4, 2007.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“The ghosts of Vietnam continue to haunt the Bush-induced invasion and occupation of Iraq.”

[RWC] It’s funny how liberals fallback onto Vietnam and Watergate.  It’s like they think they’re reliving a glorious youth.

“The Associated Press reported the Bush administration has finalized new guidelines to screen Iraqi refugees, including those seeking asylum because helping the Americans has put them at huge risk.

“In yet another benchmark that measures this administration’s failures in Iraq - if only we had time to count the many ways - the 2 million people who have fled that country represent the fastest growing refugee population in the world.”

[RWC] “If only we had time to count the many ways?”  What a cop out!  The Times has enough time to write at least 17 editorials about smoking on private property yet can’t find the time to properly address alleged war problems?  This is what people say when they can’t do what they claim.

If the alleged “2 million people who have fled that country represent the fastest growing refugee population in the world,” what does that make the 12+ million illegal aliens in the U.S.?

“To date, fewer than 800 refugees have been admitted into the United States.  Critics charged the Bush White House was dragging its heels.

“The AP reported they argued the United States is obligated to assist many more, particularly those whose work for American agencies or contractors placed them in danger.

“The administration has relented and it now plans to allow nearly 7,000 Iraqis to resettle in the United States by the end of September.

“The only thing missing is the boats.

“After the United States left South Vietnam and that nation was conquered by North Vietnam, thousands of South Vietnamese fled the country and were given sanctuary in the United States.

“These Iraqis won’t be coming in boats.  However, their presence here is an admission of failure.”

[RWC] This editorial is an example that – by definition – whatever the Bush administration does, it must be wrong.  If the administration doesn’t allow the 7,000 Iraqis in, it’s violating an obligation.  If the administration admits the Iraqis, it’s “an admission of failure.”

Here’s a question.  Was the immigration of Europeans into the U.S. after World War II “an admission of failure” on the part of FDR and Harry Truman?
