BCT Editorial – 2/15/08

Wait and see; Editorial; Beaver County Times; February 15, 2008.

The subtitle of this editorial is “Implementation of state’s new right-to-know law will determine how good it is.”

The editorial leads off with “Imagine the Pittsburgh Pirates finish the 2008 season with a .500 won-lost record, ending a string of 15 consecutive losing seasons and avoiding a record-breaking and embarrassing 16th straight year of below-.500 baseball.  While the improvement would be welcome, the unavoidable fact is that the team is still mediocre.”  I agree.

What I find interesting is the Times doesn’t have the same view regarding Pennsylvania taxes.  When it comes to tax climate, the Times believes being in the middle of the pack or mediocre is OK.  Example editorials include “One factor” and “What gives?”

In my “One factor” critique, I wrote the following.  “Let’s use a football analogy.  If the Steelers were the subject of this editorial, would it attempt to tell us finishing 17th or 14th out of 32 teams (the equivalent of 26th or 22nd out of 50 states) at the end of the season isn’t so bad as long as the Bengals, Browns, and Ravens have worse records?”  I guess the Times editorial board liked that analogy and substituted the Pirates for the Steelers. <g>
