The right tone; Editorial; Beaver County Times; June 9, 2008.

The penultimate paragraph says, “Because of that, this year’s election is not about Obama’s former pastor or Republican John McCain’s age.  It’s not about whether Obama wears an American flag in his lapel or whether McCain’s wife’s assets should be reported.  It’s not about any of the irrelevant controversies that will be injected into the campaign.”

Did you notice the difference between the McCain and Obama examples?  The Obama examples had to do with character problems, the McCain examples did not.  That’s why the Times wants to steer clear of these issues.  Should character issues arise for Mr. McCain, you can bet the Times position will change, at least when it comes to Mr. McCain.

My position is that it’s fine to bring up these issues for both candidates as long as they are thoroughly discussed.  All other voters and I can decide for ourselves which are “irrelevant controversies.”
