Gas hogs; Editorial; Beaver County Times; August 3, 2008.

The editorial says, “Americans are finally getting the message that the United States must kick its oil dependency and find other ways to fuel their transportation needs.”  Unless by “getting the message” the editorial means economics, I disagree.

The editorial concludes with “Driving less is a start, but the United States must begin thinking about alternative energy sources along with oil conservation.  The real solution won’t happen until Americans kick their addition [sic] to oil.”  “[M]ust begin thinking about alternative energy sources?”  Since at least the 1950s with the first commercial nuclear power plant at Shippingport, we’ve been “thinking about alternative energy sources.”  As always, though, the key is economic viability.
