True believers; Editorial; Beaver County Times; August 5, 2008.

The editorial subtitle is “In tough times, the working poor keep the faith.”

I suggest you read the following papers.

Understanding Poverty in America (Backgrounder #1713); Robert E. Rector and Kirk A. Johnson, Ph.D.; The Heritage Foundation; January 5, 2004.

Poverty and Inequality; The Heritage Foundation; August 25, 2004.

The Data on Poverty and Health Insurance You’re Not Reading (WebMemo #556); Kirk A. Johnson, Ph.D.; The Heritage Foundation; August 27, 2004.

The editorial concludes with “The United States is going though a transformational time.  The way in which the working poor are treated will be a huge factor in determining what the outcome will be.”  Though I disagree with some of the programs, the “working poor” get treated fairly well.  Most (all?) pay zero federal income tax, some receiving a handout (EITC) back, and qualify for a number of so-called social programs like Medicaid, SCHIP, et cetera.  In other words, taxpayers already subsidize the “working poor.”
