Uh-oh; Editorial; Beaver County Times; November 13, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject editorial.

“If Democrats in the state House of Representatives were smart, they’d re-elect Philadelphia Republican Dennis O’Brien as speaker.

“They have two reasons for doing so.

“First, O’Brien has done a credible job in a position he acquired largely because internal issues within the Democratic caucus and its one-seat edge over the GOP.”

[RWC] Note the editorial didn’t provide any details to support the “credible job” assertion.

“The second reason is that House Democrats have shown a penchant for not being able to control themselves when they gain power.  (Bonusgate, anyone?)  A Republican speaker is a good way to temper their sometimes misplaced political enthusiasm.”

[RWC] Let me get this straight.  It’s OK to elect people who need babysitters once in office?

“Unfortunately, House Democrats will have a five-seat edge over Republicans, which has emboldened them to elect one of their own to run the chamber.”

[RWC] “Unfortunately, House Democrats will have a five-seat edge over Republicans?”  Coming from the Times?  Is the editorial board afraid PA Democrats will yet again do something so bad it’s beyond the ability of the mainstream media to sweep it under the rug?

“That’s does not bode well for O’Brien — or the state.”

[RWC] Elections have consequences.  House Democrats should do what they believe gives them the best chance to advance their agenda.
