Don’t panic; Editorial; Beaver County Times; December 12, 2008.

“[T]here’s no reason to panic because only 36 percent of the state’s 11th-graders scored at grade level on the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment science test.  It might not be so much reflection of what they have been taught as it is their unwillingness to learn or to take the test seriously.” from the second paragraph sums up the editorial.

Here’s the problem.  In its never-ending quest to defend Big Education (taxpayer-funded, government-run schools), the Times failed to note colleges have been increasingly forced to add remedial classes for students arriving unprepared for what used to be considered college level work.  Whether it’s a result of what teachers teach or what students choose to learn, isn’t it a cause for concern, and shouldn’t we find out which it is?
