Reaching out; Editorial; Beaver County Times; December 23, 2008.

The editorial subtitle is “Choice of minister to give invocation sends a message.”

This is another editorial trying to convince us Barack Obama is neither a leftist nor a partisan.  While the editorial would like to have us assume Messrs. Obama and Warren disagree on everything, they both oppose same-sex marriage, or at least Mr. Obama made that claim during the campaign.  Funny how the editorial failed to mention that fact, isn’t it?

The editorial tells us “President-elect Barack Obama continues to drive nails in the coffin of the all-or-nothing politics that has diminished our nation for two decades.”  On what basis?  Asking Rick Warren to give an invocation?

Read the following paragraph closely.

“For instance, religious conservatives and women’s rights groups might never agree on abortion; however, they could work together to prevent violence against women.  They might not agree on gay marriage; however, they could work together to reduce global warming.”

FYI, the editorial incorrectly referred to “gay marriage.”  To the best of my knowledge, homosexuals getting married isn’t the issue.  What most people oppose is two people of the same sex getting “married.”  I don’t care if a heterosexual or homosexual wants to marry a heterosexual or homosexual as long as their spouse is not of the same sex.

Note how the editorial equated a decidedly nonpolitical issue like “violence against women” with the nothing but political issue of manmade “global warming.”  The idea is to lend heft to a bogus issue by linking it with a legitimate issue.  It’s a common tactic used by people who recognize they are on thin ice (no pun intended).
