BCT Editorial – 1/9/09

Running on empty; Editorial; Beaver County Times; January 9, 2009.

The editorial subtitle is “Dropping oil prices could create problems for Venezuela and others.”

Most of what the editorial says about countries like Venezuela is OK, though I doubt the sincerity.  The reasons for my critique are the following excerpts.

“That’s why energy conservation and the development of green, renewable sources of energy are about more than curbing global warming and Americans feeling good about ourselves. …  Why can’t those who sneer at the idea of energy conservation and development of renewable energy to reduce our dependence on imported oil grasp that essential point?”

As for the editorial’s comment about “curbing global warming,” please read my paper entitled “Manmade Global Warming.”

The comment about “those who sneer at the idea of energy conservation and development of renewable energy to reduce our dependence on imported oil” is nothing more than a straw man.  No rational person “sneers” at “energy conservation and development of renewable energy” and the Times knows it.  What people take issue with is pinning our present and future solely on “energy conservation and development of renewable energy” while tying our hands behind our back regarding domestic production of coal, natural gas, nuclear, and oil-based energy.
