BCT Editorial – 2/12/09

Fair play; Editorial; Beaver County Times; February 12, 2009.

The editorial subtitle is “Changing charter-school tuition faces tough road in do-nothing Legislature.”

As a reminder, “do-nothing” doesn’t really mean doing nothing in this context.  When someone doesn’t do what the Times wants, they earn the “do-nothing” label.

“[Charter schools] are creatures of the state?”  Sure they are, just like every other public school in the commonwealth.

Times editorials have been unfavorable toward charter schools for at least the last few years.  Since this editorial doesn’t really say anything previous editorials haven’t said, please read my critique of “Right track” for most of my comments.  There are a couple of points in this editorial to address, however.

First, the editorial says the Times advocates “a flat tuition rate for charter schools.”  That’s an obviously bogus idea, but if the Times considers it such a good idea, why isn’t it pushing for a flat tuition rate for all public schools?

Second, the editorial says “The politicians in the General Assembly are masters at taking credit for something but sticking others with the bill.”  Isn’t that what the Times advocated regarding government-run, taxpayer-funded bus systems?  Times editorials constantly support sticking people with the bill who never ride these bus systems.   The Allegheny County taxes on alcoholic drinks and car rentals are just one example.
