The editorial subtitle is “Obama was right to dump troop withdrawal pledge.”

This is yet another editorial giving cover to President Obama.

What’s really funny is what the editorial doesn’t tell us. The editorial fails to note Mr. Obama’s announcement is a continuation of Bush administration policy. As I noted in another critique, the date for complete withdrawal (12/31/11, just in time for the 2012 U.S. election campaigns) is the same date agreed to by the Bush administration and the Iraqi government. Also, the pre-Obama agreement provides for combat troops to be out of Iraq cities by 6/30/09, and for all U.S. troops – not just combat – to be out of Iraq by mid-2010 should Iraqis so vote.

I doubt we’ll see an editorial critical of Mr. Obama unless it’s about a trivial issue or a policy that gores a Times ox.
