BCT Editorial – 3/6/09

No give and take; Editorial; Beaver County Times; March 6, 2009.

The editorial subtitle is “One-issue politics fails to recognize differences among us.”

For the most part, this editorial attacks a straw man of Times construction.  While I’m sure “one-issue” people exist, they are small in number at best.  Among elected officials I believe they’re nearly nonexistent.  The only exception I can think of is when it comes to abortion and judge nominations.

Let’s look at the two examples given.  On the Republican side, a politician was applauded for looking beyond his anti-abortion beliefs to support a pro-abortion nominee.  Stripping away the political power issues involved, is there anyone that doesn’t believe killing an unborn child as a means of birth control is an abhorrent practice?

On the Democrat side, it’s viewed as a positive that only 22 Democrat Senators and 80 House Democrats voted to uphold the Second Amendment.  The editorial failed to note the Supreme Court found DC’s gun ownership laws unconstitutional in 2008.

The Times has given similar comparisons in the past and they’re all the same in that it’s “good” when Republicans compromise on their principles and “good” when only a minority of Democrats uphold the Constitution.  This is how leftism creeps in.
