BCT Editorial – 11/19/09

Real bloat; Editorial; Beaver County Times; November 19, 2009.

This critique also covers the companion editorial “Museum Scrooged.”  Keep in mind I’m not judging the decision to cut Old Economy Village’s funding.  I don’t have enough info to do so.  The point of this critique is to address the Times editorial treatment of the issue.

“Museum Scrooged” tells us $15.7 million “is the paltry amount of money that was involved” to keep Old Economy Village open.  $15.7 million/year is a “paltry amount?”  To whom?  By the way, $15.7 million/year for 30,000 visitors/year means PA taxpayers paid/pay $523 for each visitor to Old Economy Village.

You’ll note neither editorial tells us what other items should be cut and/or which taxes should be raised to provide the $15.7 million/year for Old Economy Village.  This is a tendency of Times editorials.  If “Real bloat” is trying to tell us the size of the General Assembly is the reason for the cut, that’s pure populism.
