The word; Editorial; Beaver County Times; January 17, 2010.

Since October 2004, this is at least the 21st time (The second time in 10 days.) Times editorials have cited “The Daily Show” and/or “The Colbert Report” as news sources and/or sources of insight.  Previously I wrote I didn’t know if this is funny or sad.  I concluded it’s sad.

Now to the subject of the editorial.  This is a recurring theme of Times editorials and giving up liberty for anything should be a concern.  The problem is the Times appears to be “concerned” (I have my doubts.) only about giving up liberty for security.  Where are the editorials complaining about giving up liberty for government-run healthcare, education, taxation, et cetera?  Privacy is a civil liberty, so where are the editorials complaining that we must detail every aspect of our finances for multiple levels of government (income taxes, property taxes, wage taxes, etc.) or about the government access to our healthcare records required by government healthcare programs like Medicare.  Indeed, Times editorials reliably support greater government involvement in almost all aspects of our lives and the resultant reduction of civil liberties.  Let’s also not forget the Times ongoing assault on private property rights and its assault on personal behavior of which it doesn’t approve.
