“To add insult to injury, inflation isn’t the only thing that is taking a bite out of income.  Medical costs rose by 3.4 percent, the biggest advance since a 5.2 percent hike in 2007, and college tuition rose by 6 percent.”

What’s the common thread between “Medical costs” and “college tuition?”  If you answered massive government interference in these markets, you are correct.  In the case of “Medical costs,” the interference comes in the form of Medicaid, Medicare, PACE, et cetera; special tax treatment for employer-based medical insurance; prohibiting medical insurance competition across state lines; dictating what medical insurance policies must cover; and things I forgot to mention.  Please read my paper entitled “Healthcare.”

In the case of “college tuition” we have interference in the form of state-run colleges, direct government funding, grants, subsidized student loans, and probably some other routes I don’t know about.
