Safety first; Editorial; Beaver County Times; April 8, 2010.

This is another one of those “Did they really write that?” editorials.  The piece concludes with “Keep this tragedy and the 600 violation [sic] in 18 months in mind whenever anyone complains about government’s role in protecting workers.  Someone has to put safety first.”  How did “government’s role in protecting workers” by issuing “600 violation [sic] in 18 months” protect these miners?  Would they have died younger without the citations?

Don’t get me wrong; government may have a legitimate role in this area.  The point of my comment was to draw attention to the fact the Times used an apparent failure of government involvement (in addition to other parties) to justify government involvement.
