Doomed to fail; Editorial; Beaver County Times; May 12, 2010.

Forgive the pun, but take the facts cited in the editorial with a grain of salt.

Addressing alleged childhood obesity is not a responsibility of our education system.  It is the responsibility of parents.  Don’t get me wrong; meals served in school cafeterias should be healthy and in appropriate portions.  There’s also no reason for so-called junk food in school vending machines.  Heck, in my day the only vending machines in my school were for school supplies.  Beyond those commonsense actions we employed decades ago, nothing good will come of the government sticking its nose into yet another parental responsibility.

Did you note the drive-by swipe at testing student achievement?  The editorial said, “in the test-obsessed environment that masquerades as education …”  As a reminder, Times editorials constantly lobby against standardized tests for reasons I can only guess.
