“Consumers must face the reality of higher energy costs?”  I believe this comment falls in the category of “Duh!”

There are a couple of other points to note.

First, the editorial talks about “fuel savings” but never says how long it would take for the multi-thousand-dollar options to pay for themselves.

Second, the editorial doesn’t mention the market impact of a large number of diesel cars.  There’s a reason the price of diesel is already higher than regular gasoline.  Let’s also remember diesel comes from the same cut of the oil barrel as home heating oil.  A large increase in the demand for diesel would result in higher prices for both diesel and heating oil.  The higher the price of diesel goes, the longer it takes to pay back the price of a diesel engine.  It’s also possible a large number of diesel cars would result in even stricter diesel fuel and engine emission standards, driving up the cost of both engine and fuel.
