The Times has written in favor of appointing state judges over elections at least once before.  This position is consistent with leftist ideology pulling power from “we the people” and giving it to government officials.  Did you note how the proposed process is referred to as “merit selection,” as if politics won’t underlie the process?  I guess these folks think we’re pretty stupid and will fall for nice-sounding descriptions.

To be clear, I don’t know if electing or appointing judges is the better approach.  Pushing the idea that appointing judges takes politics out of the process is deliberate misrepresentation, however.
