BCT Editorial – 6/22/10

Given the Times opposes (but continues to use) “carbon-based energy,” we need to take editorials like this with a grain of salt.

I think it’s safe to say none of us wants our water polluted as a result of harvesting natural resources.  At the same time, I think it’s also safe to say most of us know there’s no way to guarantee accidents won’t happen unless we ban drilling for gas, mining coal, et cetera.  While we need to have appropriate regulations in place to minimize the likelihood of accidents and to make sure a company can fully pay for mistakes, we should not use excessive regulation as a backdoor to implement a ban we would not accept otherwise.
