BCT Editorial – 10/26/10

The editorial wants us to believe the Times wants a tax “tax on natural gas extraction” only to address potential environmental problems that may arise.  I was born at night, but not last night.

If someone proposes a tax intended and sized solely to deal with potential environmental problems, I would be shocked if the Times supported it.  Make no mistake; the Times editorial body of work indicates the Times wants the tax so the government can spend more.  If the environment were really the issue, the Times would acknowledge there’s at least one other way to make sure there are funds to handle potential environmental problems.  That other way is to require drillers to purchase adequate insurance.  That approach would not put money in the hands of the government, however.  Since the insurance route would not result in more spending money for government, I would bet the Times would oppose it.
