Quick hits; Editorial; Beaver County Times; February 23, 2011.

“CLOSING RANKS” closes with “the chances of reform are better in Egypt than Iran, Libya and Yemen because of the army’s initial reaction to the situation.”  Note the editorial did not describe “reform.”  Unfortunately, not all reform is good and Middle East history in not in our favor or in favor of those in the Middle East.

“GOOD NEWS; BAD NEWS” tells us, “The state has a structural deficit of $1 billion or more.  That built-in deficit can only be addressed by raising more revenue, cutting services or some combination of the two.”  Now read “GO FIGURE” to see how the Times really feels about “cutting services or some combination of the two.”

“GO FIGURE” is yet another example of the Times inclination to increasing taxes.  You’ll note the editorial didn’t specify any spending cuts.  That’s not surprising because Times editorials consistently lobby for more spending on just about every proposal that comes down the pike.  Indeed, the only specific cuts I recall the Times ever mentioning have been about spending to operate the PA General Assembly.
