Still at war; Editorial; Beaver County Times; May 4, 2011.

The editorial says, “But the people’s movements that are sweeping the Middle East - with varying degrees of success - are anti-terrorist in nature as well, too.  While no one can predict how they will turn out, one thing is certain: What those who have taken to the streets in Cairo, Damascus and elsewhere want - freedom and liberty - is the antithesis of bin Laden’s Islamic theocracy.”

The Times appears to have forgotten what happened in Iran just over 30 years ago.  Just as the Times claims today about “the people’s movements … sweeping the Middle East,” we were told the overthrow of the Shah of Iran was all about “freedom and liberty.”  Instead, Iranians got an “Islamic theocracy” and currently the largest state sponsor of terrorism.  The Times also seems to forget/ignore the rape of CBS reporter Lara Logan in Cairo’s Tahrir Square by members of “the people’s movements that are sweeping the Middle East.”  Based on a search of the Times website, the Times published no editorials about the assault of Ms. Logan and published only one tiny “news” article, approximately two-and-a-half months after the rape.  I guess covering that aspect of the protests didn’t advance the narrative of the protesters’ alleged desire for “freedom and liberty.”
