AAUW urges action on equal-pay legislation; Janet Wise and Patti Ottey - AAUW Public Policy Committee chairwomen; Beaver County Times; March 31, 2017.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“April 4 is Equal Pay Day, the symbolic day when women’s pay finally ‘catches up’ to the wages that men took home the previous year.

“It represents the fact that women working full-time year-round in the United States typically are paid 80 percent of what men are paid.  This affects women from student-loan debt to motherhood to leadership barriers.”

[RWC] If true, is this stat about unequal pay for equal work or is it a comparison of all men “working full-time year-round” vs. all “women working full-time year-round?”  According to a Bloomberg opinion piece, “Don’t Blame Discrimination for Gender Wage Gap.”

“American Association of University Women is working to advance equal-pay legislation in Congress and in state legislatures.  Join us by sending a message to your congressmen urging action to close loopholes in federal law and strengthen protection for working women.

“Do it for our mothers, daughters, granddaughters and nieces.  Never underestimate the power of your voice.”

[RWC] What specifically does the AAUW want that’s not covered by the “Equal Pay Act of 1963” and the “Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009?”
