Bush’s diversionary tactic; Katie Alberti; Beaver County Times; May 24, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Kudos to President Bush for taking the country’s eyes off of the war in Iraq.

“I’m amazed that he was able to sway the public’s attention toward such a minute threat as illegal immigration.”

[RWC] “Minute threat?”  Is Ms. Alberti kidding?  Depending on the estimate, we have somewhere between 7 and 20 million illegal aliens on U.S. soil.  I know folks like Ms. Alberti like to pretend 9/11 never happened, but all of the hijackers were able to pull off their mission because we didn’t enforce our border security and immigration laws.

Unless I missed something, President Bush has been doing his best to ignore the illegal immigration problem.  It’s been pressure from groups like the Minuteman Project and the border security bill passed in the House last year that brought the issue to the forefront.

“I’m sure millions of Americans would be pleased to see their loved ones working the border rather than in the harsh environment that is Iraq.  But how does this change anything?

“The United States still has thousands of soldiers fighting in the Middle East, sacrificing their lives for our country.  Shouldn’t we be more concerned with them than illegal immigrants coming to the United States?  What type of threat have they posed on our country’s well-being?

“Let’s face it.  When you’re ratings are as low as Bush’s, it is no wonder that he’s trying to turn our attention to such a petty problem.”

[RWC] “Petty problem?”

“What are our priorities?  We, as Americans, need to wake up and take a stance.

“Until Bush does something about our situation with the war in Iraq, there is no need to even be worrying and spending millions of dollars to prevent a threat that barely exists.”

[RWC] “A threat that barely exists?”  From where does Ms. Alberti get her news?
