William A. Alexander – 10/5/06

Don’t forget the illegal aliens; William A. Alexander; Beaver County Times; October 5, 2006.

Mr. Alexander has written at least 17 letters since December 2004, and they all bashed Republicans for something.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Santorum and Hart are telling us how good the economy is and how many new jobs have been added during the last five-plus years when the GOP has had control of both houses of Congress and the executive branch.

“Since 2000, about 18 percent of all U.S. manufacturing jobs were moved to foreign factories.”

[RWC] From here on out, Mr. Alexander cites a bunch of “facts” and figures but doesn’t tell us their source.  Given Mr. Alexander’s abysmal record regarding his “facts,” I didn’t waste my time trying to verify this batch.  I now assume all his facts and figures are bogus.

“This represents a little over 3.1 million jobs.

“It is doubtful that many of these jobs were held by aliens.

“I believe it was middle-income, legal United States residents who lost their jobs.

“Since 2000, 86 percent of the net increase in employed workers was aliens, the highest share for immigrants ever recorded in the U.S.

“Of this increase, 56 percent went to illegal aliens with no right to be in this country, let alone work here.

“During this same period the number of employed U.S. citizens dropped by more than 1.5 million.

“A recent study indicated that 90 percent of young Americans’ unemployment could be eliminated if they had the jobs held by immigrants.”

[RWC] Note Mr. Alexander didn’t identify the “recent study.”

“The housing construction industry has slowed for the last few months.  In the Sun Belt, illegal aliens hold the majority of construction jobs.

“I believe the explanation for the jobs decreasing and the number applying for unemployment also decreasing last month is the illegal aliens that lost their jobs were scared to apply for unemployment, because they could get deported.”

[RWC] The reason for this paragraph is to try and downplay the fact that at an unemployment rate of 4.7% (August 2006), we’re at what’s generally considered “full employment.”

“Think about who should hold jobs in the US when you vote in November.

“The GOP House is trying to get immigration under control, but they should never have let it get this far out of hand in the first place.

“Those helped by the illegal aliens are the corporations that donated so much to Hart’s and Santorum’s election campaigns.”

[RWC] Can Mr. Alexander prove this allegation?  If he can, we need to know.  Not surprisingly, Mr. Alexander fails to note Rep. Hart and Sen. Santorum both voted for the “enforcement first” immigration reform bills in Congress.  This would tend to blow a hole in Mr. Alexander’s allegation that Hart and Santorum are beholdin’ to businesses that employ illegal aliens.

In conclusion, Mr. Alexander needs to check with his party on this subject.  While Mr. Alexander asserts illegal aliens are taking jobs from citizens, his party claims illegal aliens “do the jobs Americans won’t do.”

One last point.  Bob Casey, Jr., supports amnesty for illegal aliens, yet Mr. Alexander apparently doesn’t have a problem with him.  Could it possibly be Mr. Alexander has double standards, one for Democrats and one for Republicans?
