Get the troops out of Iraq; Velma Berger; Beaver County Times; October 30, 2006.

This is the latest in a series of at least 15 Bush and Iraqi-bashing letters written by Ms. Berger dating back more than a year.  In one letter, Ms. Berger told us she was proud of John Murtha.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Bad news continues to come out of Iraq.  October has been declared the deadliest month since the war began.

“Following a strategy meeting last week at the White House, the message is still the same - continue the course.

“President Bush says as long as he has the support of his dog Barney and his wife Laura, we will stay in Iraq until the mission is accomplished.

“Public opinion is turning against the war, but this does not matter to him.”

[RWC] It may come as a surprise to Ms. Berger, but leaders don’t base their decisions on polls.

“We very rarely see the vice president unless he is on one of his hunting expeditions.  Rumsfield [sic], man of war, thinks the war is going fine.”

[RWC] When has Defense Secretary Rumsfeld ever said, “the war is going fine?”  From before we dropped the first bomb, Sec. Rumsfeld has said the going would be rough.

“These are our leaders.

“I would hope that if and when they finally decide on an exit plan from Iraq, it will be based on something more than the loyalty of the president’s dog and wife.”

[RWC] There is an exit plan – victory.

“This is why we have seasoned and intelligent military leaders.

“Bring our troops home.”

[RWC] This is at least the fourth letter Ms. Berger concluded with something like “bring our troops home.”  Even if you disagree with Ms. Berger’s letters, you have to give her credit for staying “on message,” or for being a broken record.
