People are waking up; Daniel A. Bosh; Beaver County Times; June 30, 2005.

If “people are waking up,” Mr. Bosh obviously isn’t one of them.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The June 20 ‘Salutes & Boots’ gave a boot to people who once supported the Iraq war, but after witnessing more than two years of needless death and destruction, have decided that the Bush administration’s handling of the war no longer merits their support.

“Speaking as a person who has opposed this illegal, immoral invasion of Iraq since before it began, I believe that people who have the courage, wisdom and patriotism to come to recognize the truth about this failure are to be commended.”

[RWC] You’ll notice none of those who claim the Iraq War is “illegal” ever cite the violated law.

“Nothing worthwhile has been accomplished by this war that could not have been accomplished without bloodshed.  Still, Bush jumped at the opportunity to go to war, forcing our military and their families to make sacrifices that no one had the right to ask of them.”

[RWC] Mr. Bosh wrote, “Nothing worthwhile has been accomplished by this war that could not have been accomplished without bloodshed.”  Why did he provide neither examples nor proof?  Does Mr. Bosh believe Saddam Hussein would have stepped down voluntarily so real elections could be held?  Come on, Mr. Bosh; get real.

The last I checked, the U.S. military was an all-volunteer force.  I recognize it’s easy for me to say, but when you sign up for the military you agree to fight on the battlefield to defend the country.  As volunteers, no one “forced” those in the military to do anything.  I personally have doubts that Mr. Bosh cares one whit about our servicemen and women.

“After all this time, the situation continues to worsen, the death count increases and America and the world are actually less safe than before.  Continuing this insanity will only make things worse.”

[RWC] I don’t mean to be flippant, but can Mr. Bosh cite an example of a war during which the death count went down?  Note Mr. Bosh cites nothing to support his contention that “America and the world are actually less safe than before.”

How does Mr. Bosh know “the situation continues to worsen?”  Has he spent time in Iraq?

“Many Americans now understand that, and they are to be saluted.  Boots should go to those who still refuse to admit the truth in spite of the evidence, like the paper’s editorial board.”

[RWC] Here’s another example of Mr. Bosh failing to cite his “evidence.”

“As for editorial’s claim that ‘We broke it, and we’ve got to stay until it’s fixed,’ let’s understand something.

“‘We’ didn’t break anything.  Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and the rest of the chicken hawks broke it.”

[RWC] Why did Mr. Bosh fail to mention the U.S. Congress?  Does he want us to forget Congress approved the Iraq War Resolution?  39% of House Democrats voted for the resolution, as did 58% of Senate Democrats.  Among those Democrats who voted for the resolution were Democrat darlings Hillary Clinton and John Kerry.

Apparently Mr. Bosh buys into the fantasy that pre-war Iraq was a peaceful Middle East paradise.

“They are responsible and should be held accountable for the lies they told to start the war, their ineptness in conducting it and the lives of U.S. military and innocent Iraqi civilians that have been lost.”

[RWC] Note Mr. Bosh doesn’t cite the “lies.”  I suspect that’s because he knows there were none and doesn’t want to look (even more) foolish by listing already refuted “examples.”

“We should not reward them by allowing them to continue.  Thank heaven more Americans now see that.”

[RWC] This letter is nothing more than a partisan rant built on Democrat/liberal talking points.  I hope Mr. Bosh keeps writing letters like this.
