Look at all the issues; Nancy Starr Brickner; Beaver County Times; May 6, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The April 24 letter “Abortion stand does matter” raises some questions for me.

“While I am anti-abortion, there are far more issues than just abortion that need to be addressed when one is voting for president of the United States.”

[RWC] In summary, this letter is a Bush bashing exercise from beginning to end and tries to convince us not to let abortion stop us from voting for leftist candidates.  Have you noticed we never see letters telling abortion supporters not to let that get in the way of voting for anti-abortion candidates?

“In my opinion, the abortion issue and homosexuality issue are what swept George Bush into office.  Too many people were one-issue voters.  Well, now look where we are?  Take a look at what has happened to this country because people voted one issue or the fact of Bush being a Christian, which I am also.”

[RWC] People voted for President Bush for a lot of different reasons.  For my part, neither Mr. Bush’s religion, nor the “homosexuality issue” were on my list.  I don’t even know what Ms. Brickner means by the “homosexuality issue.”  As Democrat candidates Kerry and Edwards reminded us during the 2004 campaign, VP Dick Cheney’s daughter Mary is a homosexual.  Ms. Cheney was also a part of the 2000/2004 Bush-Cheney campaigns.

Voting for Mr. Bush in 2000 and 2004 because he was a Christian would be a pretty lame idea given both Messrs. Gore and Kerry were also Christians.

“The economy has gone to pieces, and we are in a war that we are never going to win.  Each day, men and women are being killed in an unjust war by a so-called just president.  How does that differ from abortion?  Individuals are still dying.  We can’t have it both ways.  Killing is killing in the eyes of God.”

[RWC] Nothing like an all out rant, is there?

“Killing is killing in the eyes of God.”  Unlike Ms. Brickner, I don’t know what God thinks.  That said, I suspect God treats killing in self-defense differently than killing an unborn child for convenience.

“We need to take a good look at all issues, not just one.  I believe that voting on just one issue is reprehensible.”

[RWC] Note that Ms. Brickner easily referred to “voting on just one issue” as “reprehensible,” but couldn’t bring herself to use that term about abortion.

Does anyone want to bet that if someone were “voting on just one issue” and happened to agree with Ms. Brickner, that would not be “reprehensible?”
