Marriage and the GOP agenda; William Bubb; Beaver County Times; April 6, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I noticed in the remarks printed from U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum after Terri Schiavo’s death that he listed Terri as a daughter and sister.  That he did not acknowledge her as a wife is a concern.

“Does he not regard Terri as a wife also, or is marriage important only when it promotes his, and his party’s own agenda?”

[RWC] I can’t speak for Sen. Santorum, but perhaps the following was going through his mind.

Since at least 1997, Michael Schiavo may have been more legal guardian than husband.  In 1997, Michael Schiavo announced his engagement to his girlfriend even though he was still married to Terri.  His girlfriend became his common-law wife and they started a family together.  Michael Schiavo has at least two children with his common-law wife.
