Janet Burg – 11/3/10

Putting party before the nation; Janet Burg; Beaver County Times; November 3, 2010.

Ms. Burg wrote at least two previous letters I did not critique.  They were “Cut administrators’ salaries instead” (11/2/10) and “Avoid big gas companies” (9/7/05).

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The news reported the other day an Ohio McDonald franchisee told employees to vote Republican or they will not receive any raises or perhaps no jobs.”

[RWC] The note did not recommend voting for Republicans in general as Ms. Burg implies.  The note specifically recommended voting for John Kasich (for governor), Rob Portman (for U.S. Senate), and Jim Renacci (for U.S. House).

“Sounds like some sort of blackmail to me, or perhaps socialism, which is what everyone is accusing President Barack Obama of doing.”

[RWC] How can it be blackmail?  After all, unless the franchisee actually looked over his employees’ shoulders when they cast their votes, how would he know how his employees voted?

“I know this may too late to be printed for elections but will apply anytime.  I just wish to say I have never stuck with a one-party vote in my life.  I have always tried to pick out the best man for the job because to me to do any less is just party brainwashing.

“But I do see a one-sided attitude in favor of party supremacy and no concern at all for America and its people anymore.”

[RWC] Labor union management routinely tells its members for whom to vote yet I haven’t seen a letter from Ms. Burg complaining.  Why is it OK for labor union management but wrong for the guy actually employing people?
