Loyalists can’t handle the truth; James Burton; Beaver County Times; October 28, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“In response to Wednesday’s letter to the editor ‘Liberals use tactics of Hitler and Stalin:’

“The letter writer likened liberals to followers of Hitler and Stalin.  Name-calling is exactly what Democrats expect from members of the extreme right wing.  You know, those who defend and blindly follow President Bush down his road to becoming known as the worst U.S. president ever.”

[RWC] When folks like Mr. Burton claim some people “blindly follow President Bush,” this tends to mean the alleged blind followers don’t consider President Bush to be the spawn of Satan.  Unless you oppose absolutely every position President Bush took and call him names, folks like Mr. Burton believe you “blindly follow President Bush.”

“These people are always defensive and angry; they get visibly frustrated when confronted with the failed policies of their current leader.”

[RWC] And Mr. Burton himself isn’t “defensive and angry?”

You’ll note Mr. Burton didn’t identify “the failed policies” of President Bush, yet below Mr. Burton exhorts his opponents to “get informed.”

“But I’m not ignorant enough to lump all Republicans together, especially when those who really do their homework and not just spew rhetoric have abandoned Bush in droves.”

[RWC] Mr. Burton claims he’s “not ignorant enough to lump all Republicans together,” yet he appears to assert only “those who really do their homework and not just spew rhetoric have abandoned Bush in droves.”  I guess lumping Republicans into two groups is not being “ignorant.”

“As a matter of fact, Republican John McCain gets down right annoyed when compared to him, even though he voted with Bush 90 percent of the time, a fact he has proudly shared with the media.”

[RWC] Gee, members of the same political party agree on issues far more than they disagree.  What a surprise.  The same is true for Barack Obama and Democrat party leadership.

“May I suggest that before you get defensive and irate, get informed.”

[RWC] Hmm, why didn’t Mr. Burton take his own advice?
