A new direction for America; (The Rev.) John T. Campbell; Beaver County Times; August 14, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“With the defeat of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., in this latest election, I am becoming more hopeful for the future of America.

“Voters are turning against the failed policies of the Bush administration, and the Congress that has rubber stamped them.”

[RWC] I can only assume Mr. Campbell is not familiar with Sen. Lieberman’s record if he believes Sen. Lieberman “rubber stamped” Bush administration policies.

With the sole exception of the war on terrorism, Sen. Lieberman is as liberal as you get short of the MoveOn.org wackos.  For example, Sen. Lieberman’s 2005 Americans for Democratic Action voting record was 94% and he was the VP candidate in 2000.  The American Conservative Union gave Sen. Lieberman a 2005 rating of 8%.  Between these two ratings, how much more liberal do you need to be to satisfy Mr. Campbell?

“There is a new rising tide of progressive energy that is demanding leaders who will stand and fight, not duck and cover.”

[RWC] Does Mr. Campbell realize how nuts this sentence is?  It’s his “new rising tide of progressive energy” that wants to “duck and cover” regarding the war on terrorism, not “stand and fight.”

Everyone knows the Connecticut Democrat primary was a single-issue election in an extremely “blue” state.  The only significant difference between Sen. Lieberman and Ned Lamont was that Sen. Lieberman supports the war on terrorism – including the Iraq War – and doesn’t believe we should cut and run.  Even so, Sen. Lieberman disagrees with the Bush administration on the execution.  Ned Lamont, however, is in the MoveOn.org camp and believes we should get out of Iraq yesterday.  Even so, Lamont won by only about four percent, hardly a landslide.

“It is my hope and prayer that the American public has had enough of the lies and abuses of power of the Bush administration, and will use their votes in the upcoming elections to sweep the power-hungry, right-wing Republicans out of office.

“Politicians like Bush and his cronies say that they want to get things done while they are in office.

“The problem isn’t getting things done.  The problem is that the things that have gotten done are weakening this country.

“Let’s hope and pray that all Democrats and all Americans will stand up and fight for a new direction for America.

“It’s time to stop the lies.”

[RWC] For an alleged reverend, Mr. Campbell is long on accusations and short on examples and proof.
