No way to protest election results; Marcie A. Capo; Beaver County Times; November 14, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“As I sit here writing this letter on Veteran’s Day, it is with great sadness that I do so.

“I was horribly disgusted to read Saturday’s article ‘Upside-down flag in protest of Obama.’

“The article reported the Pulaski Township man said he is flying Old Glory upside down in protest of the recent election results.”

[RWC] I agree Larry DeBaker’s action was inappropriate and this critique is in no way intended to defend it.

“I understand that not every American is overjoyed by the results of the presidential election; however, such hate and disgrace should never be displayed.”

[RWC] Twice Ms. Capo refers to “hate” and “hatred.”  Though this action was inappropriate, there’s nothing in the article to indicate any hatred on the part of the Mr. DeBaker.  According to the article, Mr. DeBaker said, “I do feel people are in danger.  This country is in distress as far as I’m concerned.” and that we “elected to the highest office in the land someone we don’t know anything about.”  That doesn’t sound like hatred to me.

Unfortunately, Ms. Capo is not alone is her apparently gratuitous use of the term “hate.”  Especially from those on the left, whenever you disagree with folks like Ms. Capo, it’s hate speech.  It’s like all criticism of Barack Obama being attributed to racism.

“This gesture surely came as a painful slap in the face to all of the men and women who have fought for and are still fighting for that flag.  Both of my grandfathers, my father-in-law and many friends have served this fine country and defended the Stars and Stripes.

“If the Pulaski Township man is so dissatisfied with the United States — sweet land of liberty, home of the free and the brave — maybe he should move.  Perhaps China, Russia, Iraq, Afghanistan or North Korea would better suit him.  I am certain one of those countries would be happy to accept his apparent hatred and disrespect of the United States.”

[RWC] What BS!  Mr. DeBaker never expressed dissatisfaction with the U.S.  He simply – though in an inappropriate manner in my opinion – expressed displeasure at the election’s results.  That’s an opinion shared by about 59 million voters.

“To all of the men and women who have fought for our flag, our country and my freedom to write this letter, I say, ‘Thank you and God bless you all.’”

[RWC] Where was Ms. Capo when the Times published editorials denigrating the efforts of our troops?  Also, where was Ms. Capo when some lefty celebrities actually said they’d leave the U.S. if we re-elected President Bush in 2004?
