Congress lacks leadership; Frank Chirico; Beaver County Times; August 22, 2012.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In reference to Luke Berardelli’s ‘Obama lacks leadership’ letter.  The fact is these current members of Congress have done far less than the 80th Congress Harry S Truman dubbed the ‘Do Nothing Congress.’”

[RWC] I think Mr. Chirico means the House of Representatives, more specifically House Republicans, not Congress.  Then again, the last two years the Democrat-majority Senate voted down President Obama’s budget proposals 99-0 and 97-0.

“It’s not leadership, it’s a sideshow that will do nothing and has done nothing to prove their point even if that means hurting middle class workers/families/economy.”

[RWC] You’ll note Mr. Chirico doesn’t give any specific examples of Republicans “hurting middle class workers/families/economy.”

“As for President Obama having total control of both caucuses, he passed 34 major legislative bills, including a small one, ‘Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,’ aka Obamacare.  Have you heard of it?  Since then, there has been six signed into legislation as of Jan. 3, 2011.  All on paper; look it up.”

[RWC] Just in case anyone missed it, Mr. Chirico’s idea of good congressional “leadership” is to be a doormat for President Obama and “pass[ing] 34 major legislative bills … including … Obamacare” in only 24 months.  You’ll note Mr. Chirico doesn’t explain why with all of those wonderful new laws the economy remains in the tank.

When was the last time “pass[ing] 34 major legislative bills” increased our individual liberty instead of chipping away at it?  Our liberty takes a hit every time we enact another program or grant government agencies the power to enact regulations/rules without approval by Congress and the President, even those with good stated intentions.  The same is true for state and local government.
