The right spending priorities; Lonzie Cox, Jr.; Beaver County Times; January 12, 2006.  I am not related to Mr. Cox.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The collapse of the bridge onto Interstate 70 is just a good example of where the money being wasted in destroying Iraq is allowing the home front to deteriorate.”

[RWC] Oh brother!  Perhaps I should blame the Iraq War for my winter cold.

“The wages of right-wing conservatism is misery and possibly death.  That 45-year-old bridge was built during the height of the liberal era when the United States spent lots of money on the people of this country.”

[RWC] “The wages of right-wing conservatism is misery and possibly death?”  What a joke!  Can anyone provide an example?

On the other hand, we have example after example of what happens when Mr. Cox’s pals get their way.  Nazi Germany, North Korea, Red China, and the Soviet Union are just four examples of socialism in action.

“The Democrats, through President Kennedy’s programs, and President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, spent the American taxpayers’ money on the American people with Medicare, Head Start, student grants and loans and urban renewal.”

[RWC] I guess Mr. Cox forgot about St. JFK’s spending on Vietnam, the space program, the Bay of Pigs, and – oh my God – tax cuts for the rich!  Why didn’t JFK spend this money on the poor? <g>

In case you missed it, every program noted by Mr. Cox has been a failure.

“Republican President Dwight Eisenhower led the interstate highway program.  The rabid conservatives were out of power.  They had held sway with racism and oppression of the ethnic working classes of all races for centuries, but for the time being they were out of power.”

[RWC] I always get a kick out of people like Mr. Cox and his fellow travelers trying to portray conservatives as racists and oppressors.  This ignores that the Republican Party’s roots were opposition to slavery and a Republican president ended slavery.

Let’s look at the Democrat record regarding race issues.

·        St. FDR nominated a former KKK member (Hugo Black) to serve on the Supreme Court and a Democrat-controlled Senate approved the nomination.

·        FDR and a Democrat-controlled Congress imprisoned over 100,000 Americans of German and Japanese descent simply because of their ethnic heritage.

·        FDR and a Democrat-controlled Congress maintained a racially segregated military for 12+ years.

·        Democrats led by Sen. Lyndon Johnson watered down President Eisenhower’s 1957 Civil Rights Act.

·        A Democrat governor called out the National Guard to block black children from attending school.  A Republican president sent in the Army to enforce the kids’ rights.

·        Democrats led a filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  A far greater proportion of Republicans (more than 80%) voted for the act than did Democrats (less than 69%).  Of the no votes, over 75% were Democrats.

·        St. RFK authorized wiretaps of Martin Luther King to determine if he was controlled by the USSR.

·        A former KKK member, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), served as Democrat majority/minority leader and president pro tempore of the Senate for most of the time between 1977 and 2003.

“The Vietnam War hadn’t got really roaring yet, so the emphasis was on jobs and building the country up after the economically slow Eisenhower years.  The conservatives squealed like pigs about Democrats spending money on the poor of this country.  They wanted it spent largely on military stuff and tax cuts as usual.”

[RWC] What did liberal/socialist eras do for the families in Nazi Germany, North Korea, Red China, the Soviet Union, et cetera other than bring or maintain oppression and poverty?

“We need another liberal era where we rebuild America and its people and its roads and bridges for the families of this country.”

[RWC] What did liberal/socialist eras do for the families in Nazi Germany, North Korea, Red China, the Soviet Union, et cetera other than bring or maintain oppression and poverty?

“Conservatism mixed with right-wing religious fanaticism is destroying the United States one bridge, one tunnel, one road at a time through neglect.”

[RWC] If Mr. Cox wants to know where the money to maintain our road system is going, he need look no further than his own party.  As just one example, who believes fuel taxes paid by car and truck drivers should pay for mass transit?
